Elgar Steps Away: South Africa's Former Captain Chooses Family Over Final Cricket Chapter
Veteran batsman prioritizes family time over final cricket contract with Essex
Dean Elgar, the 39-year-old left-hander who captained South Africa’s Test team, will retire from professional cricket at the end of this season. He joined Essex on a three-year contract but has decided his final chapter belongs at home, with his family.
“I feel it’s the right time for me now. I’m not getting any younger, 39 years old, and I’ve got a lot of things going on back home with regards to a young but growing-up-very-quickly family,” Elgar said through Essex’s website. “It’s the right time for me now to be present at home and be there for my partner and my kids.”
The pull of family life, then, is what ends a career spanning more than two decades.
Elgar made his Test debut in November 2012 against Australia at The Waca and went on to play 86 matches for South Africa, accumulating 5,347 runs, 14 centuries and 23 half-centuries. His maiden Test hundred came in January 2013, a 103 not out against New Zealand. He followed it with another century at Galle as South Africa defeated Sri Lanka. His most striking individual performance may have come in Cape Town in 2018, when he carried his bat against Australia, scoring an unbeaten 141 in a match South Africa won by 322 runs. He remains the only batsman to carry his bat twice in a single calendar year, having repeated the feat against India just two months earlier.
He assumed the captaincy during South Africa’s Pakistan series in early 2019 and took the role on a permanent basis two years later after Quinton de Kock resigned. His tenure included a 2-1 series loss to England in 2022. The following year, he struck 185 against India in a seven-wicket victory that leveled a two-match series. He announced his retirement from international cricket in January 2024.
Beyond Test cricket, Elgar scored 2,594 runs across 104 T20 matches and accumulated 18,981 runs in 279 first-class appearances, a record that speaks to durability as much as talent.
At Essex, he has opened the batting in all nine County Championship matches this season as the club sits seventh in Division One. Earlier this year, he scored 92 and an unbeaten 107 against his former club Surrey at The Oval in a match that ended in a draw.
Chris Silverwood, Essex’s director of cricket, was direct about what Elgar brought to the dressing room. “With a career spanning more than two decades, his reputation as a senior, experienced opening batter has made him an extremely important figure during his time at Essex, particularly in helping develop the club’s younger players,” Silverwood said. “For Essex, his time was more than simply scoring runs. We had a player with international experience at Test level, proven credentials and an old-school appetite for occupying the crease, coupled with a hunger for victory. It’s been an absolute pleasure to have had him in my team.”
Silverwood added that Elgar’s career would be remembered for “longevity, resilience and deep commitment to cricket.”
Elgar remains available for Essex’s final five County Championship matches of the season. The first is a home fixture against Surrey at Chelmsford, starting Thursday, which raises a quiet question: how many of the younger players he has mentored this season will be watching closely, knowing it is nearly the last time they get to learn from him in the middle.
