Corrections Policy — Cape Town Bulletin

Cape Town Bulletin is committed to accuracy, fairness and transparency in our reporting across Cape Town and South Africa. When we make a significant factual error, we correct it promptly, explain what changed and why, and keep a public record of corrections.

How to report an error

If you believe we have published incorrect information, please contact us: - Email: [email protected]
- Or use our online /contact/ form

When you write, include the article URL, headline, a clear description of the error, any supporting documents or links, and your suggested correction where possible. We do not accept corrections by phone or post.

Internal review process

  1. Acknowledgement — We aim to acknowledge receipt within one business day.
  2. Preliminary assessment — A duty editor reviews the report to determine whether it raises a factual issue that requires a full review.
  3. Verification — The reporter and a fact-checker (or another editor) investigate the claim by checking sources, original notes, recordings and third-party documentation.
  4. Consultation — If needed, we consult with the author, legal counsel or outside experts. For allegations involving potential harm or legal risk, we follow expedited internal procedures.
  5. Decision — The editor assigns the outcome: silent edit (minor typo/clarity), correction, clarification, removal or retraction.
  6. Implementation — Corrections are made and documented (see below). The reporter and editor sign off on the final wording.

Where corrections appear

  • The corrected article will be updated online and will include a clear correction note showing what was changed, why, and the date of the change. For transparency, major corrections are noted at the top of the story; minor but substantive corrections are noted at the bottom.
  • A record of significant corrections will appear on this Corrections page so readers can see a public log.
  • For significant or widely shared errors, we will add a note to related social media posts linking to the corrected story.

Timelines

  • Acknowledgement: within one business day.
  • Preliminary assessment: same business day where possible.
  • Standard verification and decision: typically within three business days.
  • Implementation of routine corrections: within 24–48 hours of decision.
  • Complex or legally sensitive cases: may take longer; we will keep the requester informed of expected timing.

We retain published material as part of the public record except in narrow cases (legal obligation or safety risk) where removal may be necessary. Our aim is to correct the record accurately and transparently.
