Global lawmakers converge in Cape Town to defend democracy amid rising pressures

CAPE TOWN — Speakers of Parliament, legislators, and governance specialists from nine regions of the Commonwealth began arriving in Cape Town this week for a conference that will test how democratic institutions respond to a world order under pressure.

The 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference opens Sunday at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, drawing participants from Africa, Asia, Australia, the British Islands and the Mediterranean, Canada, the Caribbean, the Americas and the Atlantic, India, and South Asia. Both sessions lead into the Official Opening Ceremony at 5:30 pm, setting the tone for the deliberations ahead.
