Johannesburg Families Face Crisis as 28,000 Jobs Vanish in Three Months

JOHANNESBURG’S JOB LOSSES SIGNAL DEEPER CRISIS IN CITY’S ECONOMIC FUTURE

Between April and June 2026, Johannesburg shed 28,000 jobs, according to the Quarterly Labour Force Survey released by Statistics South Africa. For the families dependent on those wages, the numbers translate into immediate hardship: lost income, eroded economic security, and the daily struggle to meet basic needs.

ActionSA has flagged the job losses as evidence of systemic government failure. The organization argues that what appears as a quarterly statistic masks a far more consequential reality for hundreds of thousands of residents and their households now facing poverty and unemployment. The loss of work in the country’s largest economic center carries weight beyond the city itself. As Johannesburg struggles, the ripple effects spread across South Africa, with residents searching for employment, small businesses fighting for survival, and the cost of operating a business climbing.

The city’s position as South Africa’s economic powerhouse has become increasingly difficult to sustain under these conditions. ActionSA contends that the government lacks a coherent strategy to generate growth or create pathways to dignified employment. For years, South Africans have heard promises of economic transformation, investment programs, and structural reforms. Yet the economy continues to fail at absorbing people into stable, meaningful work.

Job creation requires more than political rhetoric, ActionSA argues. It demands clear planning, decisive leadership, and concrete investment in the conditions that allow businesses and workers to thrive. The organization points to its own track record as evidence of what focused governance can achieve. During the 2016 to 2019 period when ActionSA leadership held the position of Executive Mayor, the city facilitated over R17 billion in investment. That investment supported the creation of approximately 110,000 new jobs during the 2018/19 financial year alone.

Those years saw targeted employment initiatives across multiple sectors. The city brought more than 4,000 workers into permanent positions through the insourcing of security guards and cleaners, roles that came with benefits designed to improve household stability. The Inner City Rejuvenation Plan launched with the explicit goal of generating over 22,000 jobs during its construction phase. Law enforcement expansion added another 1,500 new Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department officers to the payroll.

That period represented a different trajectory for the city. Infrastructure functioned more reliably, investment flowed in, and economic growth appeared within reach. By contrast, ActionSA attributes the current reversal to what it describes as collusion between the ANC and DA against residents’ interests.

The organization now calls on Johannesburg residents to reassess their circumstances and consider ActionSA as an alternative direction. Through what it calls Operation FixJoburg, the party promises to accelerate service delivery, restore the rule of law, and generate employment that can sustain families across the city. The proposal rests on the premise that the current path has failed working people and that a change in leadership and approach is necessary to reverse the job losses and restore economic opportunity.

Whether that promise can translate into the kind of household stability that 28,000 newly jobless families need is the question Johannesburg residents will have to weigh before the next ballot.
